How to Use an Egg Ring

Which came first? The Egg or the Egg Ring?

It may be imagined egg rings were creations of the cook staff in royal houses. What else explains the neat presentation eggs make when cooked in an egg ring? The egg ring might have begun as a wood or metal circle approximately three or more inches in diameter. Egg rings need to be heat proof and of food-grade quality material.

How To Use An Egg Ring
The simplicity with which egg rings are used in cooking is the hallmark of their function. A dish of bacon and eggs always appears more elegant upon presentation when eggs are cooked inside an egg ring. For fried eggs, use a light coating of butter, margarine or butter-flavored pan spray in the pan. Place the egg ring inside the center of the pan. Then, just break the egg into the egg ring and fry sunny-side up until the egg white becomes solid. For eggs over easy, simply use a frying utensil to turn the eggs and egg ring over. To remove eggs from an egg ring, place the egg ring on a plate and use a knife around the edges of the egg ring to loosen. Then, just lift the egg ring away.

Using An Egg Ring For Other Dishes
Egg rings have many diverse uses. Make coddled or poached eggs using an egg ring to keep the eggs from spilling over into liquid. Or, use an egg ring to make perfect pancakes. To make breakfast pancakes more interesting for kids, place the egg ring onto a heated griddle, pour pancake mix until the egg ring about three-quarters full. Slice a maraschino cherry in half for eyes. Use a two small semi-sweet chocolate bits for the nose and a thin slice of apple for the mouth. Or, for a tasty variation, pour pancake mix into the egg ring and garnish with thinly sliced apples and a sprinkling of cinnamon and sugar blended. Allow the pancakes to rise fully as they cook.

Fancy Sandwich Rounds For A Special Luncheon
Another really impressive way to serve finger sandwiches is to use various types of bread and your egg ring. Place the egg ring in the center of each slice and press until the egg ring penetrates thoroughly. Fill with thinly sliced cucumber or watercress.

Making Spectacular Desserts With An Egg Ring
Using ordinary cake mix, pour batter into egg rings about three-quarters full. Bake until the tops are golden brown in a moderate oven. Allow the rounds to cool. Then, use each of the rounds as a base for ice cream. Or create beautiful lemon curd “cakewiches”. Just spread lemon curd atop one of the rounds. Place a second round atop the first and frost with a fluffy cloud of whipped cream topping. Create little “jewel boxes” with each round. Slit carefully to form a pocket. Fill with fresh fruit such as strawberries, blueberries or raspberries. Top with a praline frosting made from pecans and brown sugar.
